I'm Theresa. Lol
I know James Pickford was born in Salford 1919 as he was my husbands grandfather.
His perents were John and Emma Pickford both born in salford in the late 1800s.
Thank you so much for the list of pickfords Im this will be of some help.
A kind lady from a salford forum is going to check the marrage cert of John and Emma at the manchester library is going to find out who there parents were as I am from yorkshire it is a way to travel just to see a cert.
I noticed that on your pickford list you have a pickford from the 1600s how do you trace someone back that far?
The BMD records office will take you back to the 1830's then you have to go to the county records office. You can view BMD records on-line through http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/.
Before the 1830's you have to go to the county records office of the last known municipal borough. They will have the BMD records of each parish in some cases going back as far as the 1500's. You can see most of these on the Mormon website www.familysearch.net The birth records normally give the parents names and then you can look for marriage lines. Once you exhaust the parish records you need to look at deeds of land records and wills etc for additional information. I have traced my surname back through land deeds to Edward White 1070 who we are 90% certain was son of Wulfweard the White. Surnames started around the time of the Norman conquest.
Pickford
English: habitational name, perhaps from Pickforde (‘pig ford’) in Ticehurst, Sussex. The surname is now most common in the Manchester region, but it does not seem to have reached there before the 17th century.
for name distribution see http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/Fact.aspx?fid=6&ln=Pickford&o_iid=9970&o_lid=9970
Hope this helps a little more
You may want to look for Avrel Pickford. He researched the Pickford family lines back to their original name Pigge. Has photos and war stories . He is from Jeannette , Pa. Also traced them back to Great Brittan and Germany. Good luck.

I suggest you join the PICKFORD emailing list at RootsWeb part of the Ancestry group.

These are like forums for researchers to share data, you email the "List" and everybody on the list gets your email, then you get everybody else's emails to the list - obviously a lot of it will be irrelevant to your search, but by following how other people get their results and give each other advice, you learn a lot about how to do it.
I'm only interested in helping people with Norfolk (UK) ancestors, so there's no point in us being "Friends" on here until you find a Norfolk connection in your tree
Good luck with the search - it took me three years to do mine
